The United States Air Force facility commonly known as Area 51 is a highly classified remote detachment of Edwards Air Force Base, within the Nevada Test and Training Range. Situated at its center, on the southern shore of Groom Lake, is a large military airfield. Mercury and west to Yucca Flat. Area 51 shares a border with the Yucca Flat region of the Nevada Test Site, the location of 739 of the 928 nuclear tests conducted by the United States Department of Energy at NTS. The origin of the Area 51 name is unclear. Area 51 is not part of this system, it is adjacent to Area 15.

The Ranch“, also known as Site II, initially consisted of little more than a few shelters, workshops and trailer homes in which to house its small team. In Nov 1959 an „A-12 mock-up undergoes RCS testing at Groom Lake“. 3 surplus Navy hangars were erected on the base’s north side—hangars 4, 5, and 6. A fourth, Hangar 7, was new construction. The original U-2 hangars were converted to maintenance and machine shops.
